Arlo’s $99.99 Solar Camera Runs 6 Months Sans Sun
Arlo has introduced its first solar-powered security camera, and the headline number is hard to ignore: up to six months of power without any sunlight at all. Announced on September 29, 2026, the Arlo Essential Solar Security Camera pairs an integrated solar panel with what Arlo calls a category-leading battery, priced at $99.99.
Pre-orders are open now in black and white, with shipping expected to begin in mid-October 2026 — just in time for the holiday season.
Power that doesn’t quit
The camera’s party trick is its energy system. The integrated 1.2W solar panel needs as little as two hours of sunlight per day to keep the camera running indefinitely. And when the weather refuses to cooperate, the 14,790mAh battery carries the load — Arlo claims up to six months of runtime from a full charge with zero sun.
“Consumers want security cameras that can protect their property without the hassle of wires or dragging the ladder out for frequent charging,” said Arlo CEO Matthew McRae at the launch. “With the Essential Solar Security Camera, we combined an integrated solar panel and the category’s most powerful battery to address common convenience needs and deliver protection that doesn’t run out.”
Serious specs for $99.99
Despite the budget price, the spec sheet is robust:
- Video: 2K resolution at 24fps with a 130-degree field of view
- Night vision: color night vision with a white LED spotlight
- Audio: two-way audio plus a built-in siren, controlled through the Arlo Secure app
- Durability: IP65 weather resistance in an ultra-slim housing with three mounting holes for flexible placement
- Connectivity: dual-band Wi-Fi with automatic band switching
- Smart home: works with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT and Samsung SmartThings
AI via Arlo Secure
Like the rest of Arlo’s current range, the smarter features sit behind an Arlo Secure subscription. Paired with a plan, the camera taps into the Arlo Secure Early Warning System, adding Smart Object Recognition, Event Captions and extended Video Event History — AI tools designed to explain what’s happening around your property rather than just recording it. Basic live streaming, motion alerts and two-way audio work without a subscription.
Why it matters
Solar security cameras aren’t new, but most bolt a separate panel onto the camera with a cable in between. Integrating the panel into the camera body makes installation cleaner, and the oversized battery gives Arlo far more margin when winter arrives. At $99.99, it also dramatically undercuts most solar cameras on the market.
The timing is deliberate: a mid-October ship date puts the camera on shelves for the peak holiday security-buying season, when shorter days make power autonomy a genuine selling point.
Outlook
The Essential Solar Security Camera solves the two complaints that plague budget cameras — dead batteries and complicated installs. If the six-month battery claim holds up in real-world testing, Arlo will have a genuine set-and-forget option at an impulse-buy price. Expect the subscription attach rate to be the real story Arlo watches.
