Aqara Outdoor Plug H2 EU: Thread, Zigbee, Energy Monitoring

Aqara is taking its smart plug lineup outdoors. The company has officially launched the Outdoor Plug H2 EU, a weather-resistant smart plug that brings dual-protocol connectivity, real energy monitoring, and built-in safety cutoffs to gardens, patios, and balconies. Announced on October 20, 2026 alongside the Curtain Controller C100, the plug is now available through the Aqara Shop and European Amazon storefronts.

The standout trick is a choice most smart plugs never offer: on a single piece of hardware, you can run Matter over Thread or Zigbee, and switch between the two protocols later if your setup changes. For outdoor gear — garden lights, pool pumps, patio heaters, holiday decorations — that flexibility matters, because outdoor networks are often a mix of ecosystems and the plug you pick has to live with whatever hub you already own.

One Plug, Two Protocols

The Outdoor Plug H2 EU continues the dual-protocol approach Aqara introduced earlier this year with the indoor Power Plug H2 EU and H2 UK models. In Thread mode, the plug pairs directly as a Matter over Thread device with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, or Home Assistant. All you need is a Matter controller and a Thread border router — no Aqara hub required. If you want it inside the Aqara Home app while in Thread mode, you’ll need an Aqara hub with a border router, such as the Hub M3.

In Zigbee mode, the plug connects to an Aqara Zigbee hub — including older models — and isn’t a native Matter device in that mode. Instead, a compatible Aqara hub exposes it to Matter ecosystems through Matter bridging. The tradeoff is worth knowing: Zigbee mode currently unlocks extra Aqara-exclusive features, including a configurable maximum load and status light settings. Aqara says LED configuration is coming to Thread in a future firmware update, so the gap should narrow over time.

Whichever mode you choose, the plug also strengthens the mesh around it, acting as a Thread router or Zigbee router depending on the active protocol. That’s a genuine benefit outdoors, where the distance from the router is usually the first thing that breaks automations.

Built for Real Weather

The plug carries an IP44 rating, meaning it’s protected against splashing water and solid objects larger than 1 mm — fine for a covered patio or a garden wall socket in rain, though not for a spot that floods or takes direct hose blasts. The manual lists an operating range of -10°C to 40°C, and the housing measures 55 mm across and 100.8 mm tall. It plugs into Type E or F outlets and provides a Type F socket rated for 16A / 3680W, enough for hefty outdoor loads like patio heaters and water pumps.

Aqara sells two versions: a standard model (SP-P06E) with a tricolor indicator light, and an RGB version (SP-P06D) with a full-color LED ring around the power button. Note that the two are sold through different channels, so check which variant a store is actually listing before you order.

Energy Monitoring and Safety That Reacts

This is where the H2 EU earns its keep over a basic timer plug. The device tracks power draw in real time and shows daily and monthly usage in charts inside the Aqara app. Changes in power draw can also trigger automations — for example, running a pond pump or heater only when it’s actually needed.

Two details stand out for energy-conscious households:

  • Charging protection automatically switches the plug off after 30 minutes of draw below 3W, which catches devices that keep sipping power once they’re fully charged.
  • Idle consumption is 0.4W or less, so the monitor itself doesn’t become part of the problem.

On the safety side, the plug cuts power automatically on overload or if it reaches 80°C, with no intervention needed. A child lock disables the physical button so curious fingers can’t flip it, while app, voice, and automation control keep working. The button stays live for network and factory resets, so you can never fully lock yourself out.

Background: Aqara’s Dual-Protocol Play

The Outdoor Plug H2 EU lands in the middle of an interesting industry transition. Matter over Thread has become the default path for cross-platform compatibility, but millions of homes still run on Zigbee — and Aqara has one of the largest installed bases of Zigbee hubs in the industry. Rather than forcing users to pick a side, Aqara’s H2 line lets one product serve both camps: Thread for the hub-free Matter household, Zigbee for the established Aqara household, with bridging covering the middle ground.

The timing is also seasonal. Outdoor plugs are one of the few smart home categories with a genuine holiday rush — think of Halloween lighting and the December decoration season — and launching in late October puts the H2 EU on shelves right as shoppers start automating their exterior lights.

What It Means for Buyers

At €32.99 in Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Spain (€39.99 in Italy), the Outdoor Plug H2 EU is priced in line with premium outdoor smart plugs, but few competitors bundle energy monitoring, overload cutoffs, and dual Thread/Zigbee operation in one unit. The closest alternatives tend to lock you into one protocol or skip power metering entirely.

The main caveats: full feature parity between the two protocols isn’t there yet — power users who want every Aqara-specific setting will need to run Zigbee mode — and the RGB variant isn’t stocked everywhere the standard one is. But as a weather-ready way to bring outdoor appliances into a Matter or Aqara setup with real visibility into what they’re costing to run, the H2 EU is one of the more thoughtfully specified outdoor plugs we’ve seen this year.
