Alexa+ Rolls Out Across the US: Price, Features, Prime Perk

Amazon’s generative-AI assistant has gone mainstream. In February 2026, Alexa+ became broadly available across the United States, marking the biggest shift in the Alexa ecosystem since the voice assistant first launched. Prime members get unlimited access at no extra cost, while everyone else can choose between a limited free experience and a $19.99-per-month subscription.

Alexa+ US rollout: key facts

  • Broad US availability began February 2026
  • Prime members: unlimited Alexa+ at no additional cost
  • Non-Prime: limited free chat, or $19.99/month for unlimited access
  • Works across Echo devices, the Alexa app, and Alexa.com
  • Access extends to the entire household for Prime members

What Alexa+ actually does differently

Alexa+ is a significantly upgraded version of the traditional Alexa voice assistant, powered by generative AI. It is designed to handle more conversational requests, remember context across a conversation, and complete more complicated tasks than the original Alexa.

In practice, that means you can speak naturally instead of memorizing exact command phrases. Amazon says Alexa+ can help research topics, plan activities, manage calendars, create reminders, and deliver personalized recommendations. It can also take action on your behalf: ordering takeout, finding restaurants, booking a ride, or scheduling services such as home repairs.

Pricing: the Prime advantage

As of September 2026, Alexa+ is available to all customers in the US. Prime members get unlimited access to the next-generation assistant at no additional cost — effectively a $20-a-month perk bundled into the membership they already pay for. Amazon says access extends to the entire household.

Customers without Prime have two options: a limited free chat experience through the Alexa app and Alexa.com, or a $19.99-per-month subscription for unlimited access. The pricing makes Prime membership the obvious on-ramp for most households, and it is clearly part of Amazon’s strategy to deepen the value of Prime.

Smart home at the center

For smart home owners, Alexa+ connects with compatible devices including Ring cameras, and Amazon has been steadily expanding the roster of supported devices and services. The assistant’s conversational abilities matter most here: instead of rigid command syntax, you can describe what you want — dimming lights, checking cameras, adjusting thermostats — in natural language, with follow-ups that build on context.

Amazon reports that customers have nearly twice as many conversations with Alexa+ on Fire TV as they did with the original Alexa, suggesting the more natural interaction model is changing how often people actually talk to the assistant.

Background: a long road to launch

Alexa+ was a long time coming. Amazon first previewed its generative-AI assistant ambitions well before the February 2026 broad rollout, spending the interim period expanding device compatibility and refining the experience. The February launch put Amazon in direct competition with Google’s Gemini for Home, which began its own early access rollout on Nest speakers and displays.

The pricing strategy also evolved. Amazon initially restricted Alexa+ on Fire TV to Prime members or paying subscribers, then reversed course in August 2026 by making it free on Fire TV devices — a sign of how aggressively the company is pushing adoption.

Outlook

The broad Alexa+ rollout is Amazon’s bet that the voice assistant’s future is conversational AI, not command parsing. By bundling unlimited access into Prime, Amazon has given tens of millions of households a reason to try it — and a reason to stay inside the Alexa ecosystem. The real test now is whether Alexa+ can deliver on the “assistant that gets things done” promise reliably enough to change daily habits, and whether non-Prime users find the $19.99 subscription worth it.
